Santa Fe Workshop on the Grammar Pragmatics-Interface

As the title suggests, this workshop examined the grammar-pragmatics interface in theoretical linguistics. The workshop participants included Thorstein Fretheim from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, who spoke on the discourse-anaphoric nature of Norwegian ellers and English otherwise; Catherine Travis, from the University of New Mexico, who spoke on the development of discourse markers in Spanish; Polly Szatrowski, from the University of Minnesota, who spoke of her research on participant status and person restriction in Japanese co-constructions; and Hooi Ling Soh, also from the University of Minnesota, who spoke on the differences between English and Mandarin Chinese aspect and nominal expressions. The workshop was organized to celebrate Jeanette Gundel's 60th birthday. Jeanette Gundel, a professor of linguistics at the University of Minnesota, is a leading researcher in the area of grammar and pragmatics. Her 1974 disseration, The role of topic and comment in linguistic theory (later published by Garland Press) was a seminal work in the area of understanding the relationship between topic-comment structure and grammatical form. Her numerous papers on cognitive status and the form of referring expressions have had broad impact. The workshop participants included former students and colleagues of Professor Gundel.
