International Workshop Series on Spanish Language Processing and Language TechnologiesThe goal of the International Workshops on Spanish Language Processing and Language Technologies (SLPLT) is to promote the creation of an infrastructure for carrying out research and development in the computational processing spoken and written Spanish. They do this by bringing together researchers and developers from Europe and the Americas to present the most recent advances in the field and to catalog resources available for research and development and by promoting cooperative efforts among participants from different geographical regions. The size of the workshop is limited to approximately 80 participants (at least 20 from each region) and the structure of activities emphasizes broad descriptions of research and development activities and infrastructure accompanied by ample discussions. It is expected that the participants will learn about what is happening in the field outside of their particular areas of specialization, find out about available resources and funding opportunities and establish collaborative ties with other groups around the world. The first workshop in the series took place in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in July of 1997 immediately prior to the Sixth Conference on Theoretical and Methodological Issues in Machine Translation (TMIMT). It was organized by David Farwell of the Computing Research Laboratory at New Mexico State University who was the workshops primary sponsor. There were 40 participants from Spain and Europe, from the US and Canada, and from Mexico and Latin America. The participants represented major university research centers (including NMSU, CMU, UMD, Simon Fraser, UMIST, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, DEUSTO-Bilbao, Universidad de las Américas-Puebla, Universidad de la República-Montevideo, among others) and industrial developers (Microsoft, BBN, Logos, SYSTRAN, among others). SLPLT-2 was held in Jaén, Spain in 2001 as part of the 17th Meeting of the Spanish Society for Natural Language Processing (SEPLN). There were 70 participants from 11 different countries in Europe and the Americas representing the major university and industrial research centers. This workshop was again sponsored in part by the CRL but was sponsored as well by SEPLN, the University of Jaén and the University of Alicantre as well. A third workshop in the series in being planned for Barcelona in 2004 to be held in conjunction with the Annual Meeting of the Association for Computational Linguistics. |
