I have reserve one or two spaces for members of BMBA. Let me just remind you that this is a very basic training designated for those with little experience in trail work (some of the new staff at Franklin Mountains). If some of the BMBA members have taken the IMBA trail workshop, I would suggest to send the interested parties with the less experience (but this is not required, you guys can send whoever you like). We will be inviting Robert Newman to the training as his experience can be very useful during the sesions. In regards, the points we discussed during the meeting last month, I have received positive feedback in regards the bike patrol program. We need to set up another meeting to begin planning the program and then work on the details. The weather prediction is great, the view above treeline at the top of Frazer Mountain is most excellent! I get my daily fix here: http://www.skitaos.org/mountain/webcamimage.php Speaking of the NMORS - once again it is my job to keep the racers confused and antsy about the standings - with several years of experience now, this is a job I excel at! Thanks for your patience. The family priorities which have kept me busy are calming down and I have actually spent some time beginning the compilation process, no I'm not making this up. Several people have offered to help and I'm reaching the point where I can profitably delegate some work to them. So I ain't promising 'by a certain date' - just letting you know that I haven't forgotten or given up on it. --Cliff _/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/ "If the horse represents slavery and the car represents indolent consumption, the bike represents nothing but the honest profit of inventive genius" - Zoe Williams Cliff Loucks Albuquerque New Mexico ~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ To unsubscribe: send a request to Cliff: loucks at swcp.com From bigringrider at aol.com Mon Jul 28 11:31:20 2008 From: bigringrider at aol.com (bigringrider at aol.com) Date: Mon, 28 Jul 2008 13:31:20 -0400 Subject: [bmba] Alamogordo Native is 1st woman to complete Great Divide Mountain Bike Race In-Reply-To: <701525.88784.qm@web30704.mail.mud.yahoo.com> References: <701525.88784.qm@web30704.mail.mud.yahoo.com> Message-ID: <8CABEEEE1EF749B-17EC-AD4@WEBMAIL-MA16.sysops.aol.com> -----Original Message----- From: Matt Turgeon To: foomtb at yahoogroups.com Sent: Sun, 27 Jul 2008 5:00 pm Subject: [FooMTB] Fw: An adventure to share - Tour Divide '08 FYI.....? check ouyt the Alamagordo newspaper..? http://www.alamogordonews.com/sports/ci_10000950 --- On Sun, 7/27/08, Siren Bicycles wrote: From: Siren Bicycles Subject: An adventure to share - Tour Divide '08 To: "Mary Collier" Date: Sunday, July 27, 2008, 10:20 AM Tour Divide '08: done. Woohoo! We did it. I'm very proud to be the first woman to race the entire length of the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route.? July 13th 2008, I pulled into the Mexican Border to finish the epic journey of a lifetime, made possible with the support of so many people. I raced 2,711 miles- climbing 200,000 feet over 29 days 17 hours and 37 minutes. These numbers are pretty abstract until you see the terrain and look at a map to be able to understand it. I'm still trying to process it all myself.? The inaugural Tour Divide started in Banff, AB, Canada June 13th at 10a.m. with 16 men, and me; the only woman. Historically, Divide racing on the border-to-border route has had a high attrition rate. This year- the first to add the Canadian leg- was no different. ?Only nine of us racers made it to Mexico, with almost half the field dropping for mechanical or medical reasons. The sheer brutality of this course cannot be overstated. When I started the race, I had hopes of doing it faster, but in retrospect, I am immensely satisfied to have successfully completed the entire race without having to pull out. I confronted many challenges, including: - all-night hike-a-bike sections through snow (over fresh bear tracks)? -lifting a 50?lb., fully loaded bike over downed trees and snags -staying alert & aware of wildlife- bears and mountain lions were often nearby, evidenced by tracks and fresh kills? -climbing multiple mountains in one day? -severe leg swelling for most of the race? -deep fatigue setting in, from almost a month of back-to-back century races! This was unlike anything I've ever done... but I can't say I wouldn't do it again. ?:) I want to say thanks to all of my sponsors. I had some of the nicest gear out there- thanks to these guys: Stans NoTubes?- I love my race wheels and other components you guys have helped me with.? Kenda?- Thanks to Jim for getting tires to me in Canada. Siren Bicycles?- My Song 29 was purpose-built for racing the Continental Divide and performed flawlessly GoreBikeWear?- These clothes got quite a workout, and I was well prepared for the mountain weather. SRAM?- The Reba 29 was wonderful, and I never had to adjust my shifting at all (OVER ALMOST 3,000 MILES) Smartwool?- they are sponsoring the forthcoming film documentary, and sent me some great clothes for the race The Path?- thanks for the package of goods to Grants! Syntace Giro I will be publishing a day-by-day write up. Until then, photos are up on Picasa: http://picasaweb.google.com/sirenmary/tourdivide08 This was the ride of a lifetime and the memories will forever stay with me. I know that I've grown because of this experience and am forever grateful. Thanks for all your support and contributions to the effort. Mary P.S.
