If you still weren't good with my previous explanation you could have emailed me about it directly. I'll share the happenings at Cedro that had me (course designer/prize coordinator/helper) have the Pro/1/2/SS course the same. Our initial idea was Pro/1 - 30 miles (~2.5hrs), Cat 2 23 miles (~2.5 miles), and Cat 3 - 8 miles (around 1hr). Cedro is faster than most courses so I/we thought these distances would be challenging and rewarding. Then the issues with private land (and this year it meant NO private lands!) came up in the last week...after 8 months of dialogue with the forest service about the race we got a major hurdle/curve ball on Monday before the race, then again on Thursday. We never once lost sight of putting on a great race so we came up with a course that would suit two of those previous distance goals, the Cat 3's and 2's. We cut out the Pro/1 start loop from last year because we were afraid of mass confusion and made it a little simpler for them. Trust me, we Pro's still had a great hard race from start to finish. Promoting a race is stressful at times, but so rewarding because we give back to the sport in a similar way that the sport has given to us...a sense of accomplishment, community, and self confidence that improves the world around us. Maybe we didn?t get it perfect this time - that would have been our first course option. Maybe Signal didn't get it perfect...although maybe those Cat 3 boys had the ride of their lives! I thought our race down there was top-notch and the festivities/prizes/overall vibe was great! At least the current promoters are still promoting and we're still racing, perfection can wait and always be that just-out-of-reach goal that we continue striving for. We were able to make a substantial donation to the American Cancer Society and do something good for the world while we got to enjoy a bike ride. We can criticize any or all aspects of how someone did it, and throw around ideas about how they SHOULD have done it. Bottom line the promoters DO IT and it's not usually for much money if any...at least give them some respect, if not gratitude, and spare them the rude 'ridiculous' comments. Final word to the critics - maybe next year. It was challenging (and got the best of me on that particular day), but on a good day, I would find it a fair balance of challenge, distance and time. (I liked the fact it went up to the tower at the start.) Distance wise, it is comparable to other Cat 2 series events. Several racers I talked to found it to be almost directly comparable to the Signal Peak Cat 2 course in as a challenge. If anything, the Cat 1s could have gone longer, as intended, but all factors considered it was a good and fair call by the promoter. The Signal Peak promoter understands that they mis-calculated on the beginner course and do not look to do that again. (They thought they were following the format from prior years). Likewise, the Coyote Classic race at the start of the season dialed it a bit hard for many of the beginners - an issue that is being looked at in planning for next year. The promoters (myself included) are aware of and receptive to these concerns and considerations. As always, feedback on particular events is appreciated and helpful. If you feel this is insufficient, George Haggerty is perhaps the best official USAC contact person to follow up with on your concerns.
