Group ride Message-ID: <920475.79817.qm@web50412.mail.re2.yahoo.com> Just a reminder that we are having our monthly group ride this Sunday the 4th at Heinrich Park starting at 9:00 a.m.? All riding abilities are welcome and we will be breaking up into groups depending on your ability.? Everyone will have?someone to ride with. We will be providing some burgers and dogs - if you want to bring something else to eat that would be appreciated.? This is a sort of a potluck. If you haven't been out to check out the trails in the N.E. then this is your chance...there is some beautiful stuff out there guys. Also - we will be having a pre-Puzzler ride on the 11th of January.? We'll start at Tom Mays at the upper parking lot at 9:00 a.m. sharp.? We'll be doing the 35 mile loop.? Plan on around 5 hours.? This will be a leaderless ride.? Come on out to see the course and get an idea of how long it will take you.? Be sure and come prepared - lots of water, extra slime tubes, food and cell phone.? We'll cook some food after the ride - 1st one back can get the grill started. Two weeks ago from last Tuesday I was riding the N.E. trails and riding the Sotol trail and Mad Cow, as I was riding i kept hearing shooting one ridge over. I thought surely no one would be shooting in such a well traveled area. I finished Mad Cow and came out by the gate where the corals and ect. are. I noticed a Police unit and several other cars and suvs. There was a target set up in the middle of the road (?east west ) on the North side of the gate, a police officer walked up and asked me what I was doing and I replied that I was riding the trails out there and his reply was is there anyone with me, I said no but there may any number of people out here biking hiking ect. Long story short his reply was I had to turn around because they were going to keep on shooting, this is after I warned him that they were shooting into state park land. There target was placed where they were shooting up one road and across another ( very careless ) their only back drop was the Mt. aprox. 1/4 mile away. There is no way from where they were shooting from that they could see anyone going North South on the road or if anyone was on the road?further up road.?I could hardly believe it ! Its one of the most careless and unprofessional things I have witnessed. It was like he was totally surprised that there might be anyone out there. I reported it to several areas of the dept including the head of the swat team, with no reply so i have since went to the media. I know this is long winded but I felt it necessary to let you guys know to be aware, I don't want someone possibly to get harmed because I kept this to myself. There is A LOT of buzz being generated about it and the website is getting lots of hits. This week I've started receiving emails in regards to the event. Some of the questions being asked are in regards to volunteering and for host housing. So once again, I'm putting out the call for volunteers. We can use you for half a day or a full day. You will get free entry into the park, a t-shirt, and food. DJ Singh is our volunteer coordinator, and anyone who wants to volunteer needs to reply back so I can get all the interested parties in one email group for DJ to contact you. I have also had requests for host housing and I have one person committed to staying at my house. If you would be interested, reply back to this email as well. I really didn't just go off half cocked. What bothers me is how many people knew about it and said or done nothing. The real issue for me and should be for everyone else is public safety. I will talk to another LT in the police dept but, as I was informed he is a MTBer and he even knew they practiced their long range shooting out there. There can be a positive spin put on this which is my goal. I have delt with the media before in a few different situations including when I worked at the Sheriffs Dept. Bowen can look good because it will show he has?concern for the public safety and the PD is welcome to have someone there?,as far as I'm concerned to try to defend their position ( ha ha.. ).??I'm not looking to get noticed or recognition, just to see that this stops and for the PD to think about their thinking process in regards to this situation. I am and always have pro law enforcement. By the way if you were riding on that road the day when they were shooting you may have been the x pres. ... I hope this doesn't make the black sheep or something, but it wouldn't be the first time I made a stand for what is clearly right. c-ya on the trails Rodger B. You may want to give Brent Sanders a call in regards to getting media attention on this incident.? Several of us were discussing it.? If they had permission, we may not want to raise too much of a stink since Bowen could easily cut us off from passing through his land.? That would mean we'd be riding Sotol as an out and back. ? Brent said something to me about someone who knows the SWAT guys and he said he'd have a word with them, but we may not want to draw too much attention to it. ? Brent's phone # is 845-1097.? He'll fill you in on who said they would talk to SWAT. ? Old man Bowen is getting pretty old.? I haven't seen any youngster Bowens working that area.? There's a good chance that if no one bugs him, he'll will that block of land to the state park when he kicks the bucket. ? FYI i called Ne command center, central, State parks and talked to their capt no response from anyone. I left message for the Lt of swat to call me in regards to an issue on public safety and I gave it?more than a couple of weeks to hear something. I also have been shooting since I was 6 years old and if you read the original e-mail you would have to recognize how unsafely they were shooting. They were shooting up one road and across another with the mt. 1/2 mile or so away and shooting into a state park. Give me a break that was a bone head move for anyone, especially police officers. I followed a better set of protocols trying to get some response on this issue than they did on deciding to shoot out there enough said. c-ya --- On Sun, 1/11/09, Manny wrote: From: Manny Subject: [bmba] Police shooting long range To: "bmba at crl.nmsu.edu" Date: Sunday, January 11, 2009, 11:16 AM Use constructve critizism when speaking. Be absolutely sure you have identified your target beyond any doubt. Equally important, be aware of the area beyond your target. This means observing your prospective area of fire before you shoot. Never fire in a direction in which there are people or any other potential for mishap. Think first. Shoot second. Know how to use the gun safely. Before handling a gun, learn how it operates. Know its basic parts, how to safely open and close the action and remove any ammunition from the gun or magazine. Remember, a gun's mechanical safety device is never foolproof. Nothing can ever replace safe gun handling. Be sure the gun is safe to operate. Just like other tools, guns need regular maintenance to remain operable. Regular cleaning and proper storage are a part of the gun's general upkeep. If there is any question concerning a gun's ability to function, a knowledgeable gunsmith should look at it. Use only the correct ammunition for your gun. Only BBs, pellets, cartridges or shells designed for a particular gun can be fired safely in that gun. Most guns have the ammunition type stamped on the barrel. Ammunition can be identified by information printed on the box and sometimes stamped on the cartridge. Do not shoot the gun unless you know you have the proper ammunition. Wear eye and ear protection as appropriate. Guns are loud and the noise can cause hearing damage. They can also emit debris and hot gas that could cause eye injury. For these reasons, shooting glasses and hearing protectors should be worn by shooters and spectators. Never use alcohol or over-the-counter, prescription or other drugs before or while shooting. Alcohol, as well as any other substance likely to impair normal mental or physical bodily functions, must not be used before or while handling or shooting guns. Store guns so they are not accessible to unauthorized persons. Many factors must be considered when deciding where and how to store guns. A person's particular situation will be a major part of the consideration. Dozens of gun storage devices, as well as locking devices that attach directly to the gun, are available. However, mechanical locking devices, like the mechanical safeties built into guns, can fail and should not be used as a substitute for safe gun handling and the observance of all gun safety rules. Be aware that certain types of guns and many shooting activities require additional safety precautions. Cleaning Regular cleaning is important in order for your gun to operate correctly and safely. Taking proper care of it will also maintain its value and extend its life. Your gun should be cleaned every time that it is used. A gun brought out of prolonged storage should also be cleaned before shooting. Accumulated moisture and dirt, or solidified grease and oil, can prevent the gun from operating properly. Before cleaning your gun, make absolutely sure that it is unloaded. The gun's action should be open during the cleaning process. Also, be sure that no ammunition is present in the cleaning area. ? ?
