Warning: It is kind of long.] In 1998, mountain biking became a part of my life, probably for the rest of my life. From the start, the physical aspect of mountain biking was important; along with my office mate at the time, I was trying to quite smoking. But like many endeavors, the people are the most important part of this story. To paraphrase someone from somewhere else, "I don't like riding in the Las Cruces/El Paso area, but the mountain biking community is fantastic." No kidding. This is my Tenth Anniversary tribute to that community. I would like to mention two things first: 1. I typically do not use full names because some people are uncomfortable being talked about in public. So I use the first name and first letter of their last name. If you don't know them, start cycling around the area and figure out who they are. They are all worth knowing. 2. There are many names that not mentioned here, but rest assured that if you had some impact on mountain biking in my life, you have been mentioned in one or more conversations over the years, and probably will be mentioned again. You won't be forgotten. Even if you want to be :-) -------------------------------------------------------------------- Ground Zero was my office mate, Mark D. In 1998 we were both smokers who were quitting. If not for Mark's dedication to riding at least once a week that first year, I might never have kept up the habit. The person most responsible for my love of racing is James C. (formerly of Outdoor Adventures). I had raced at Franklin Mountain State Park once on a whim, but James gave up a Sunday to drive someone he did not know very well to the race that would get my competitive drive going again. It was also the race that predicted where I would place in most of my subsequent racing career - somewhere in the middle. When racing started taking a lot of my time, I spent a lot of time traveling and camping at races with Roger and Sally H., Ed F., Mike F., and Steve S., racers and parents of racers. A lot of good times were had with this bunch. In early 1999, Mark D. and I ended up at a BMBA meeting in El Paso one night. That was my first introduction to an MTB community, mostly in the form of Marty ?, Crandall M., and Gilbert M. Marty's noisy enthusiasm, Crandall's willingness to talk about minutia at length with someone much less knowledgeable, and Gilbert's solid passion always inspired me. Gilbert is a regional MTB pioneer in several ways, but for me, his most important impact was passion. He loved mountain biking for all the right reasons. For a beginning rider, Gilbert's rides in the Dona Anas were awesome. Period. He even raced once in a while just to show the youngsters that older don't mean unable. Somewhere down the line at one of the BMBA meetings and group rides at Redd Road, I met Doc M. and Chris "Father Guido" S., and mountain biking for all of us around here got just that little bit more fun. Doc, bein' a Texan and all, had the stories, the chops, and the trailbuilding skills to really put El Paso on the MTB map. Between Doc and Chris, the parties at Doc's house after the Redd Road rides became legend - Father Guido cooking, Doc hosting. My riding partner for a long time was Alfonso B., who merits special mention for introducing me to the woman who is now my wife. But his most important impact on my MTB life was his good humor and optimism, and willingness to run off to races and rides. I have to thank his wife Diane for being understanding and even encouraging when we needed to get out and ride. Another long-time riding partner is someone that almost everyone will recognize, Raymond "Smokin' Man" P. Raymond was already a fixture on the MTB scene when I came along, and over the years, his most important contribution to my MTB life has been his enthusiasm. It didn't matter, ride, race, bad weather, good weather, he wanted to ride, loved to ride, and we did ride. There were lots of times that I might have missed a worthwhile ride if it hadn't been for Raymond bugging me until I agreed to go. I can't recognize Raymond without recognizing his wife Micki. Any spouse with that much patience, well... there ought to be a medal. One day Raymond and I met up with a newly arrived beginning rider, David H., to ride the Robledos. Definitely not a beginner trail. We did our best to run him off. We pushed fairly hard through this technical trail, and David did his best to keep up. He was gone by the time we got back. But that didn't scare him off, not by a longshot. Because we are approximately the same age, David and I had a friendly competition going at the races, and eventually, when I ran out of time to organize the New Mexico Off-Road Series around 2002/2003, I got the final word in our competition and handed the NMORS over to David. Who has done a brilliant job with it since then, I might add. At some point, I took over the reins of the BMBA, and eventually, there came a time when BMBA went quiet. Mostly because I didn't have the energy to keep interest up - as many of you know, organizing mountain bikers can be like herding cats. A lull in the action was natural. One evening, at a BMBA meeting in El Paso, its future showed up. The firey radical we all now know as Brent "Guillermo" S. and the ever elegant Susanne "The Dane" R. came through the door. As soon as "Guillermo" opened his mouth, I suspected he and "The Dane" were probably going to be important to the future of the BMBA. And they are. I didn't know whether Brent would have us demonstrating against "The Man" in front of City Council Chambers, or get a mountain biker elected to City Council, but he and Susanne were going to get something done. Thanks to these two and Dave W., the BMBA is alive and well with enthusiam and determination the rule, not the exception. One thing that I always enjoyed was riding with the Junior racers. The goofiness and enthusiasm was always fun to be around. Though they aren't Juniors any more, chapeau to Tane H., Dan F., Ian F., Chris P., Chris M., and Chucky L. You guys pushed me harder than you know, to my benefit. We happen to be blessed with a large amount of excellent trail around here. Thanks to our local trail builders, we don't often get tired of riding local trails. In El Paso, Gilbert M., Robert N., and Doc M. (and others), gave us Gilbert's Trail and the legendary stuff off the end of Redd Road that taught me something new, every ride. In Las Cruces, we can thank CJ for pioneering some cool stuff in the DAs, Mike L. for helping get and keep our trails on the straight and narrow with the authorities, and Anonymous (whoever they may be) for knowing what a fun trail is, legit or otherwise. To all the bike shop guys that have at one time or another impacted my MTB life, Robert, Mike, Pablo, Don, and Adrian, thanks! And a final shout out to the Tuesday night group ride crowd. It has been a marvelous 10 years of mountain biking for me. Here is to another 20. See you out there! From bmbaelpaso at hotmail.com Thu Mar 5 07:47:00 2009 From: bmbaelpaso at hotmail.com (BMBA El Paso) Date: Thu, 5 Mar 2009 07:47:00 -0700 Subject: [bmba] Official BMBA communication Message-ID: Hello everyone! The BMBA hopes you've been enjoying our wonderful trails here in El Paso...which we are working hard to expand and improve. The BMBA is a non-profit dedicated to improving mountain biking in El Paso by working with the city and the state to bring more trails with better connectivity to the area. If you are not an official member of the BMBA, we encourage you to join. You can download a membership application here - http://bmba.wordpress.com/become-a-member/ This automatic mailing system has been a wonderful resource for riders in the area, but it is NOT an official tool of the BMBA. Since the BMBA is an officially licensed organization, the members feel that this auto-mailer system has misrepresented the club too many times with information from people unaffiliated with the club. Since this has caused much confusion, it has been decided that the system will be shut down at the end of the summer. Below is a list of the whys and the options for future communication. Signing up to receive this email service does not make you a BMBA member....you must pay $25 to join (see link above) Multiple trail building activities and group rides were/are being announced on this email service that were/are not sponsored or endorsed by the BMBA. The BMBA has it's own email list which you get put on if you are a member. The BMBA has a monthly club ride. This ride is a wonderful opportunity for you to network with other riders in order to arrange other rides throughout the month. You may also want to use the New Mexico or Texas forum at www.mtbr.com to arrange other group rides. Items for sale were being listed with this service. If you want to sell items locally, try www.craigslist.org, or www.nmcycling.org (there is a classified section there). If you want to reach a bigger crowd, use mtbr. If people want to buy stuff, they usually look for it themselves. I'm sure this email will get lots of semi-hostile responses, but the BMBA is working hard to build its brand and gain more official members. The need for our club in El Paso has never been greater. The club is designed to bring all levels and types of mountain bikers together to speak as one voice and grow the sport in El Paso. The city has turned to us to help develop trails, skills parks, and pump tracks in city parks. We need more members to get this done. If we don't get the participation, we will miss out on a wonderful opportunity of more trails that are more accessible to more people. If we miss out, it could mean a stagnation in bike sales, more obesity, and loss of existing trails. For more info on the club, check out our website at www.bmba.wordpress.com. We look forward to meeting you and signing you up at the next club ride.....Sunday April 5th, 9 am at Tom Mays State Park-upper parking lot....or at our next meeting...Monday April 6th, 7pm at Sunset Pizza on Mesa. The email address bmba at crl.nmsu.edu will be gone by August 1, 2009. The goals of the new list will be the same as the old one - post cycling related stuff, but not ads for businesses. NMSU is hosting this list and has a policy against using NMSU resources for commercial gain without prior agreement with NMSU. If you have an idea of what we should name the list, please email them to me or the list. Once we have a bag full of names, we'll have an informal vote to select one.
