A sample text of 29 input propositions connected using approximately 20 relations
was used to test the capabilities of the system. Rules were written with the
aim of producing four different styles of text. The following texts were
produced:
(context: Jesus has done the following things:)
NORMAL FORMALITY
God reconciled all creatures to himself by means of Jesus in order that the creatures might praise Jesus. That is, he made peace with them by Jesus' death on the cross. Therefore he rescued us so that Satan does not reign over us. And God changed us so that Jesus rules over us. That is, he saved us by means of Jesus, forgiving us for our sins.
Because he lives in Jesus, Jesus makes known to us God's personality.
And he made the creatures by means of Jesus, God made them so that they praise Jesus. And Jesus holds them together. And Jesus rose from the dead so that he has priority over the creatures so that he gives life to the church. Therefore, he rules over the church just like the head controls the body. This is why he is superior to the creatures.
FORMAL
For all creatures accolades towards Jesus, he is the means by which God conciliated them with himself; that is, by means of Jesus' passing on the cross, God ended the hostilities against the creatures. One may therefore conclude that God delivered us with the result that Lucifer does not lord over us. And God transformed us with the result that Jesus reigns sovereign over us. That is, Jesus is the means by which God liberated us, pardoning us our iniquities.
He dwells in Jesus; therefore, Jesus reveals to us God's likeness.
And God created the creatures by means of him, God created them with the result that they extol Jesus. And Jesus keeps them whole. And Jesus rose from the dead with the result that he has priority over the creatures with the result that he gives life to the church. One may therefore conclude that he reigns sovereign over the church just like the head governs the movement of the body. These are the reasons that he is superior to the creatures.
INFORMAL - SLANG
The Big-G saved our hide so Old Nick does not rule us. And God changed us so Jesus is our boss. That is, Jesus is the way God sets us free, forgiving us for our screw-ups. This is true since Jesus is the way God settled things between all creatures and himself so that the creatures might really whoop it up for Jesus. That is, Jesus' croaking on the cross is the way God patched things up with the creatures.
He shacks it up with Jesus so that Jesus makes known to us God's personality.
And he made the creatures by means of Jesus, God made them so they really whoop-it-up for Jesus. And Jesus glues them together. And Jesus is the church's boss just like the head is in charge of the body. This is true since he defeated the grim reaper so he has priority over the creatures so he gives life to the church. This is why he is superior to the creatures.
SIMPLE - FOR CHILDREN
God helped us so that the mean old devil is not our king. And God changed us so Jesus is our boss. That is, Jesus is the way God set us free, no longer being mad at us for our bad things. This is true since Jesus is the way God settles things between all creatures and himself so that the creatures might praise Jesus. That is, Jesus' death on the cross is the way God patched things up with the creatures.
He lives in Jesus so Jesus tells us about God's personality.
And he made the creatures by means of Jesus, God made them so they praise Jesus. And Jesus holds them together. And Jesus is the church's boss just like the head controls the body. This is true since he became alive again after being dead so he is more important than the creatures. Because of this, he helps the church to live. This is why he is greater than the creatures.
A few comments are in order. The middle paragraph
of
each translation seems a bit awkward. This is a result of the semantic analysis,
which put the one small relation that comprises it on equal footing with the
first and last paragraphs. That is, the top level relation describing the text
is made was of the form:
top-level-relation: conjoining relation-22 ;; -> first paragraph relation-23 ;; -> second paragraph relation-17 ;; -> third paragraph
In general, this is an hard situation to produce coherent text with. How does one give equal prominence to such a comparatively small piece of text? Humans would probably use some focusing device (``The second aspect of Jesus...''). A similar approach could be used in a system like this, but preconditions to identify such a situation would need to be written first.
The development time for rule writing was extremely short. Given the constraints, the output shown above is excellent. Relatively more time was spent on writing rules and lexical entries for the first paragraph, so evaluation should center on it.
Due to limitations which produced less than ideal sentence boundaries (see Future Research), some of the directly related items suffered. For instance, conjoining clauses together, which depends critically on sentence length, was treated almost in passing, with the result that ``and'' was used almost exclusively. In contrast, the rules for all of the other semantic relations were fairly well developed.
