Geothermal Drive at the driving range. From I-25, take the University exit and turn east toward the Organ Mountains. Take the first right onto Las Alturas Drive, pass the golf course and take the first left where Las Alturas bends left around the construction. Head up the dirt road toward A Mountain until you reach the orange and white gate. |
The race loop is mostly singletrack with some dirt road thrown in, and
runs almost exactly 3 miles. The distance between the starting line and the
start of the race loop provides an additional 0.6 mile (0.3 each way).
The singletrack is a good mixture of sand, loose gravel, and hard-packed dirt. The sand and gravel portions can be tricky to ride at times, but getting off and running through difficult sections is allowed. The roads are usually either loose gravel or hard-packed dirt, liberally spotted with patches of sand. One small section just off the A Mountain road provides an interesting rocky descent just before swerving right onto a hard-packed singletrack. |
Racers are usually given the option of doing 1, 2, or 3 loops, and the
Intramural staff has the option of limiting the number of riders and
grouping them as they see fit, according to the number and experience of
racers.
Cost is free to NMSU students, faculty, and staff, and $10.00 for everyone else. |
